Looking to start your utility locating project? You’ll first need to understand how it works. Here are seven tips for successful and efficient utility locating!
Before you get started, it’s essential that you establish a test point. Use a known pipe or line to test your equipment to make sure that everything is working properly. In addition, if you do happen to encounter a problem while you’re attempting to locate utilities, you’ll know that the equipment is not the issue. Mark the test site so that it will always be easily accessible for you to test your equipment.
Check The Frequency
For the most accuracy, your transmitter and locator must be set to the same frequency. If they aren’t, you won’t be able to find the kilohertz you’re looking for because it’s not transmitting.
Don’t think that you know so much that you don’t have to read the manual. Many of the most common questions that people have are actually in the manual. Be sure to reference it before you get started and during, if you happen to encounter any confusion.
Take A Course
Did you know that there are utility locating courses available for you to take? Although you can learn a lot from on-location training, as technology continues to progress, and new techniques emerge, you would benefit from taking a course with an instructor.
Although most locators are constructed to withstand the elements, they aren’t completely weatherproof. Keep your locator equipment as dry as possible to ensure the best outcome while you’re locating utilities.
You wouldn’t think that being careful with the equipment would be a useful tip – it should go without saying. However, you’d be surprised how many accidents can happen with the equipment itself. Locators can fall off the back of trucks or even get run over. Be sure to keep the equipment secure and keep an eye on it at all times.
When utility locator equipment is left on, it drains the batteries. When batteries become drained, they leak acid, which can damage the unit. Be sure to check and change the batteries regularly.
