There are many reasons why you’d need to complete a concrete drilling project, including creating a pathway for pipe or wiring, or if you want to install a fastener or anchor. Regardless of the purpose, it’s important that you have the correct tools and technique. Although it may seem to be an arduous task, it’s really straightforward with the right system.
What You’ll Need
To effectively and safely drill through concrete, you’ll need the proper tools for the job. These include a hammer drill and masonry drill bit. The ideal type of drill to get through concrete has variable speed, a hammer function, excellent grip and side handle, and a depth setting.
For masonry bits, the tip should have carbide brazed into the tip. This will provide the tough cutting necessary to get through the concrete. As you drill, this tip will constantly bump against the concrete and break it down, while pushing the masonry dust out and away from the hole.
For your safety, you should be wearing safety goggles and a mask to protect your face from any flying debris. Ear protection may also be necessary to guard your ears from the loud noise produced by hammer drilling.
For accuracy, mark the spot that you intend to drill your hole. Now, before you start your drill, ensure that you are holding the drill level and applying even pressure as you begin and throughout the drilling process.
Insert the carbide masonry drill in your hammer drill and, if you have this type of drill, set the depth gauge. If your drill doesn’t have a depth gauge, you can set the depth yourself by marking the depth on the drill itself using tape.
When you set the drill bit on your mark, be careful to apply just enough pressure to ensure that the drill doesn’t bounce. Start slowly to create a shallow hole as your guide. Then, begin to drill at high speed the rest of the way. If necessary, stop periodically to remove concrete debris before continuing.
