Concrete Drilling Tips

Follow these tips to be safe when drilling concrete.

The process of concrete core drilling involves the skill of drilling neat round holes in any concrete surface including floors and walls. Concrete core drills come in handy when you require a shelf, want to install lights or hang a frame. The most common purveyors of this practice include electricians and plumbers, as their fields of expertise require them to drill into walls, ceilings, and floors. If you’re looking to invest in your own concrete core drill, then you’re in luck as most DIY stores carry the product at very reasonable prices. Extra caution should be taken when handling it, which is why we’ve compiled a useful list of tips to help you on the way.

Your Concrete Core Drilling Checklist

  • Primarily, you will want to invest in a high-quality drill machine. If the size of your task requires added features on your drill, don’t be afraid to dig deep for your purchase.

  • Take time to go through the handbook that comes with the concrete core drill and understand it. It is advisable to be completely comfortable and knowledgeable with every part of the tool.
  • Measure the desired length and mark it using a pencil. Some drills have depth control features on them, which make the depth setting process simpler.
  • Hold your index finger on the trigger and pllace the other hand on the handle or at the back of the drilling if the handle is not present.
  • Use a pencil to mark the point where you want to drill, and then place the drill point on the mark made. Start drilling using low speed at first at the marked point. Increase speed and pressure while drilling and occasionally pull the drill away. Drill until you reach your desired depth.

Safety First

In any work environment where you are required to work with tools, you must always ensure safety measures are carried out. It is highly recommended to wear goggles to protect your eyes from particles that may blast from the surface being drilled. If by any chance you use water, or you are drilling a wet area, ensure that the drill does not get wet, especially during a plumbing job. As a precaution, beware of concrete particles that may fall from the drilling. To safeguard your hands, wear gloves to prevent injuries from hot bits or sharp objects.
